| Name: | Daniel Hayward-Reynolds |
|---|---|
| Birthdate: | 1970-03-17 |
| Location: | Out of State |
Character Name: Dr Daniel Joseph Hayward-Reynolds PhD - he goes by Dan Reynolds!
Gender: Male
Age: 34
Physical Description: 6'3", broad shouldered and athletic, blond/brown hair, green eyes. Always a little scruffy looking, and tanned thanks to his job description!
Personality: Laid back to the point that it irritates some. Has been labelled a 'stoner' due to his profession, hobbies and attitude, but is seriously just a chilled out guy. He is a hedonist. He enjoys good food, wine, whiskey, and beautiful people. Dan has never had a problem getting attention and he rarely turns it down, enjoying sex as much as he does surfing. Bit of an adrenaline junkie as well though, enjoys all water sports - piloting minisubs, surfing, sailing, diving etc, rides a motorbike and loves to bungee! Softly and well spoken (English and privately educated), smart but not super intelligent, his career has happened more by lucky chance than effort on his part. He's extremely independent, though by circumstance rather than choice. His American colleagues often find him to be 'aloof', he's never understood if this is because he's apparently quiet, or because he's British. He's not one of the lads, preferring to spend time on his own. He's an explorer at heart, and believed the ocean was the last unexplored area he could find ... till he discovered the truth about the universe. Atlantis is/was like his holy grail, the ultimate opportunity to study a world's oceans that haven't been messed with by human beings. He's a pretty private person, though affable, and hasn't ever 'settled down'. He has a reputation of a bit of a tart, he'll shag anyone, but he'll let them know its a one night stand rather than cheat them into bed. He has spent his life chasing adventure and was incredibly excited about the prospect of going to another galaxy. Getting caught up in the wraith dart will probably knock him back a little, and make him realise the dangers, but it won't stop him from finding interest in his surroundings and new things.
History/Bio: Dan's father was famous explorer and compatriot of Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Sir Joseph Hayward-Reynolds, and his mother was the young and beautiful ballet dancer, Natascha Hayward-Reynolds. Natascha died whilst pregnant with their second child when Dan was three, an ectopic pregnancy that wasn't picked up on. Dan grew up idolising his dad, watching him explore the world and gather weird and wacky things to the family home in Cornwall, though he spent a lot of his childhood with nanny's rather than his father (something which has instilled his sense of independence and 'aloofness'). Sir Joseph was involved in Sir Ranulph's expedition that found the Lost City of Ubar in 1992. Sir Joseph described it as finding 'Atlantis in the sands' and Dan has always been a little jealous, and looking for his own Atlantis ever since. However, Dan's dad was 50 when he was born to his (much younger) wife, and the exhausting Ubar expedition was his last, he died not long after.
Dan grew up in Cornwall,on the south-coast of England, near the sea (where he still keeps up the family home) and has a strong love for it, and that factored in his early career choices. His career has taken him all over the world's oceans, and he has been involved in some startling discoveries which caught the attention of the SGC. He was recruited in 2002 to the base at Antarctica and was quick to sign up when asked to come on the Atlantis expedition. He is not materialistic, and had no regrets about leaving Earth behind.
Dan doesn't have the gene, and Atlantis (though awe inspiring) doesn't feel like it's on another planet to him. The ocean though? That's something else, he is fascinated by an ocean that hasn't been touched by humans in 10,000 years, and his goal is to map the ocean floor and deep ridges, and describe as many new species as he can. He finally feels, in Atlantis, that he has reached his father's level of explorer, that he might make a difference himself now.
Languages: English, school boy Latin and French and chat up lines in a number of other languages.
Position on Atlantis or Affiliation: Assistant Scientist, Evolutionary Biologist/Oceanographer.
Interests: Diving (fully trained divemaster), swimming, sailing, anything in or on the water. Runs for exercise too, though prefers to run on a beach.
Passions: Whiskey, wine, food, sex, his mini-sub 'Bertha'.
Education/Career:
Privately educated in England as a child.
1988-1991 - BSc (Hons) Biology, Exeter University, England
1991-1992 - MSc Evolutionary Biology, Exeter University, England
1992-1996 - PhD - Ocean Science, UCLA Santa Cruz
1996-1997 - Travelling around the world, during this time he worked as a divemaster at sites around the world.
1997-2000 - PhD number 2 - Oceanography/Appliced Ocean Science and Engineering - MIT/WHOI Joint Programme.
2000-2002 - Evolutionary Biologist/Assistant Scientist, Biology Department, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Massachusetts, specialising in the study of deep sea creature morphology and genetics.
2002-2004 - Evolutionary Biologist/Oceanographer - SGC Antarctic Research Base - studying organisms preserved in the ice, and their genetic identity; the convergent evolution of 'Alien' with Earth organisms. His interests have expanded from deep sea organisms to convergent evolution in humans and mammals, after finding out about the Stargate Project. In Antarctica he coordinates deep sea investigation to the iceshelf/ancient base.
2004- to date - stationed in Atlantis - Scientist - Evolutionary Biologist/Oceanographer - with particular interest in genetic drift and convergent evolution, as well as physical oceanography of new planets. Project on Atlantis is to dtermine possibility of Earth being 'seeded' from other planets, and/or convergent evolution across galaxies. Role as Scientist on Atlantis is to oversee the deep sea work, trying to map the ocean floor under Atlantis and describe organisms found therein. Can turn his hand to land animals as well, but more comfortable in the water.
Specialisations: Deep sea topography/oceanography; evolutionary biology and genetics; marine mammal behaviour/biology; comparative physiology; biological oceaonography.
Current research topics: evolutionary scenarios; genetics of deep sea zooplankton; comparative genetics of interplanetary organisms; deep ocean trench topography.
"Determining evoluionary relationships among seafloor species and communties, and their distribution and biodiversity will help unravel the evolution of life on Earth. And it will guide our search for life on other planetary bodies."
